ThunderAI is a Thunderbird Addon that brings AI directly into your mailbox, using ChatGPT, OpenAI, Google Gemini, Claude, Ollama or any OpenAI compatible server to enhance email management.
Analyze, write, correct, translate, summarize, classify, tag and optimize your emails, and turn them into calendar events and tasks, without ever leaving Thunderbird.
New in 5.0.0: a Setup Wizard guides you on first run through choosing an AI provider, testing the connection and enabling the automatic features. No manual configuration needed, and you can launch it again at any time.
What you can do with a single click:
Let ThunderAI work on its own. Using an API integration it can process incoming mail automatically: auto-tagging, spam filtering (with a per-message report and a log), auto-summarize on open or on receive and auto-translate, both with caching.
Make it yours. Define your own custom prompts and data placeholders, with highlighting, autocomplete and validation while you type. Export and import them, choose with drag and drop which prompts appear in the popup and in the context menu and in which order, and give any prompt its own AI provider and model. Run a prompt on many emails at once, with a progress counter and a stop button, or find what you need instantly with the search box and the Ctrl+Alt+A shortcut.
With ChatGPT there is no need for an API key: you can use this add-on even with a free account! If you prefer the OpenAI API integration, just use your API Key.
Want to go full privacy and use a local LLM? Use a local Ollama server or an OpenAI Compatible API server like LM Studio, with ready-made configurations also for DeepSeek, Grok, Mistral, OpenRouter and Perplexity.
ThunderAI is available in many languages and requires Thunderbird 140 or later.

- Reply to an email with a simple, an advanced or your own custom instruction
- Proofread your text and review the result in an interactive change picker: original and suggestion side by side, accept or reject each change, or edit it manually
- Rewrite the selected text in a polite or formal tone, preserving the HTML formatting
- Summarize and translate one or more emails, in the chat window or inline in the message pane
- Add tags and classify emails according to your own criteria
