New folders can reside on mapped or network locations.

For Thunderbird v140+
Use new toolbar button for adding and removing local folders.
Add as many local folders as you want to :
- Add new local folders in the Account Settings, Account actions, Add new Local Folder
- You can use a network drive/directory
- You can load a folder from another TB profile (eg. portable TB).
