For folks who'd like to see solid Message Filter export/import functionality baked into the software: please upvote this idea I just posted to the Mozilla TBird community: https://connect.mozilla.org/t5/ideas/export-and-import-a-set-of-message-rules-to-from-a-data-file/idi-p/48145

This has been a very useful tool during these years. One could keep collections of filters and also transfer them among different computers / accounts. Now with the latest Thunderbastards versions the tool no longer works.
I'm rating 4 over 5 because it's an easy of use and very solid tool. I'd like the developers to update the add-on, if possible. I'll rate 5/5 then.

Does not work. Not updated.

Export is fine, buit no import, so useless.
As a Windows user said one can simply copy msgFilterRules.dat
For Apple this is:
Library -> Thunderbird -> Profiles -> <folder> -> imapMail <folder>/msgFilterRules.dat

It would be helpful to have the option to locate the message filter file in some user selected cloud location. (ex. https://drive.google.com/drive/my-drive/Tbird/<account>.msgFilterRules.dat or dropbox or OneDrive, etc.. )
This way Tbird would be using the same filters across all the TBirds one uses instead of having different filter versions at every location that are always fighting each other.
Additionally, all this BS nonsense about importing and exporting the filter.dat files would go away...

Your filter files can be found @
C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Roaming\Thunderbird\Profiles\PROFILENAME.default\ImapMail\MAILACCOUNT\msgFilterRules.dat
.
you can edit these files with an editor.

as I stated below, I have Ubuntu 15.4, using latest TB v.38.3. I was able to export my emails to Dropbox using this add-on when I had earlier version of Windows 8.1 and TB 37, but hate Windows now (no privacy) migrating to Linux as are a few other thousand people.
I can open single emails at-a-time within Dropbox folder for TB, but I have thousands of emails and not going to spend time opening each email to discover or guess header source.
Why TB and FF got rid of this useful, necessary functioning tool is beyond me--ESPECIALLY when one has to change or upgrade to new computers or software. Unbelievable.

Well
This feature is very usefull, then I tryed this steps
1-Install version 3.0 that you can download in http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/thunderbird/releases/
2- import your filters
3- check all your filters
4-make a upgrade to latest version as you can download on http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/thunderbird/releases/
good luck

I just installed this and it looks like it is just what I needed to archive some older emails from family and friends - I had been using a "webmail" solution for email and after the ISP deleting my email account for the second time (for not checking it often enough) i'm using Thunderbird to pull all my separate mailboxes together and now I can archive at my on pace thanks

There is a patched version of this, not a recommendation for or against, just a pointer for those not aware of its existence:

Why not update?
Let's go to use "Thunderbird Message Filter Import/Export Enhanced"

As in the subject, can we hope this great extension won't be forgot and will be updated? I really hope so!

The PlugIn doesn't work with actual versions of Firefox (some years ago it worked great).
On windows computers the rules can be found in msgFilterRules.dat.

I tried exporting message filters from version 9 in vista to version version 9 on mac but failed during import. I get the message that I am using a different file structure than the original export. The result is that all the filter destinations come out as empty as the tool cannot figure out where to put it. Both the source and destinations are identical except for Vista and Mac. Anyone one knows why this is happening.
