- Direct Link to Illustrated Tutorial: Step 1 of the onboarding wizard now includes a direct link to the comprehensive tutorial on mtfk.fr (How to install Thunderbird .deb on Ubuntu and unlock microphone dictation).
- Terminal Command Security with APT Pinning 1001: replaced the basic command with a full one-line command configuring /etc/apt/preferences.d/mozillateam-thunderbird with priority 1001, preventing Ubuntu from silently reverting to the Snap dummy package on future system updates.
- Profile Backup Guidance: clear guidance on migrating email profiles from ~/snap/thunderbird/common/.thunderbird/ to ~/.thunderbird/ to ensure zero risk of perceived data loss.

Magic Voice Scriber is designed according to the principle of absolute Privacy by Design:

1. Zero Data Collection:
The extension runs 100% locally within your Thunderbird client. We operate no external backend servers and never collect, intercept, or track your voice recordings, emails, or API keys. Zero analytics, zero ad trackers, and zero telemetry scripts.

2. Audio and Text Processing:
Audio captured via your microphone is retained strictly in volatile memory (RAM) during recording and immediately released once transcription completes or is cancelled. Depending on your configuration:
- Google Gemini API: audio is transmitted directly to generativelanguage.googleapis.com using your personal API key via secure HTTP headers.
- OpenAI / Third-party Cloud: audio is sent directly to your configured provider with strict cross-domain key isolation.
- Local Models (Ollama, LM Studio, local Whisper): processed 100% offline on your own machine.

3. Local Storage:
Your configuration preferences and API keys are stored exclusively on your device inside browser.storage.local.

4. Permission Justifications:
- compose & scripting: inserts transcribed text at caret position in the composer window.
- storage: saves local user preferences.
- menus: provides quick access to settings.
- Host permissions: connects directly and exclusively to user-configured APIs.

Some add-ons ask for permission to perform certain functions (example: a tab management add-on will ask permission to access your browser’s tab system).

Since you’re in control of your Thunderbird, the choice to grant or deny these requests is yours. Accepting permissions does not inherently compromise your browser’s performance or security, but in some rare cases risk may be involved.
