About this Add-on
AI writing and reading assistance for Thunderbird, using your chosen provider or local model. Preview draft edits, summarize messages, and translate with control.
Full description:
ThunderClaw brings AI writing and reading assistance directly to Thunderbird, using your chosen provider or local model.
WRITING AND READING
Improve, proofread, shorten, adjust tone, translate, or summarize selected draft text—or give a custom writing instruction. Generate a suggestion, review the Preview, and choose whether to Apply it. Undo remains separate from Thunderbird’s normal Send action.
While reading messages, create a separate summary or translate visible text in place. Translation supports automatic source-language detection, and you can restore the original display. The stored source message remains unchanged.
Supported formatting includes eligible paragraphs, flat lists, bold, italic, and underline on qualified Thunderbird 153+ selections. Unsupported editing structures are rejected.
YOUR PROVIDER, YOUR MODEL
Connect directly to OpenAI, OpenRouter, DeepSeek, Ollama, LM Studio, or a custom OpenAI-compatible endpoint. Choose your provider, model, and API key in the extension’s settings. No companion backend is required.
Response-token limits and thinking controls are configurable. Individual models vary in their support for structured output and reasoning settings. Hosted providers may charge for requests, including synthetic connection tests.
DATA SHARING AND STORAGE
Writing, translation, and summary requests send relevant email content directly to your configured endpoint:
• Compose actions send selected text, supported formatting, bounded authored draft context, and applicable instructions and writing preferences.
• Reading actions send eligible visible message text, including visible quoted history and signatures, with the requested action and languages.
• Recipient fields, subject and author metadata, attachment contents, and extracted compose quoted history are not included in inference requests. Sensitive details already present in the supplied text are still sent.
Your endpoint and any upstream providers have their own privacy and retention policies. Local servers can also forward requests to cloud models. ThunderClaw’s developer operates no inference service that receives your email.
API keys are remembered locally across Thunderbird restarts and are never synchronized. Local profile storage is not an encrypted vault. Protect your device and backups. Removing a saved key does not revoke it with its provider.
SAFETY AND CONTROL
• Models cannot send email or change recipients, attachments, or headers.
• Compose edits require Preview and explicit Apply.
• Model-produced HTML is never inserted into a message.
• Incomplete, invalid, unsupported, and stale results are rejected.
• ThunderClaw does not silently switch endpoints or models.
• No analytics, advertising, or sale of personal data.
Requires Thunderbird 128 or newer and a compatible model endpoint.
