My ISP redirected every DNS error to the "helpful" portals too. Problem solved.

It is really a thrill to get this plugin working for me, considering the great pain induced by the abhorrent DNS hijack from Chinese Telecom.

the plugin seems have a installation problem for firefox 3.57 Linux version. I modified the max support version to 3.6 to workaround the problem.

Thanks for the great work!

'A' for ingenuity. 'D' for research.

Dev isolated problem with ISP DNS. RequestPolicy, and NoScript (now with ABE) fill this void in some capacity.

> Verizon's search service, for which opting out was not always possible

Sure it is. Choose a new resolution provider. OpenDNS? DNSresolvers.com, GTE, etc

This fills in an important gap in taking control of my browsing.

There are other things including the builtin all-or-none "warn when redirect" which can intercept some redirection and blocking, but this seems to do it all, at least everything outside of javascript (I have various javascript blockers for that). And it is flexible enough that I can choose based on sites.

i like it, and itworks. but is there a way to prevent a blank tab from popping up everytime i get a redirect blocked?? just the info bar that pops up over the existing tab would be nice with a timer. then i can decide to click the link on that bar or wait a few sec. for it to disappear.

*edit* 7/16/09...
that blank tab issue was my fault. i use 'tab mix plus' and have it set to open links in a new tab. i changed it and set it to open in same tab and its fixed. i like opening links in new tabs, so ill just deal with the blank tab whenever i get redirected.... it only happens on a few sites anyways, and not worth changing my 'tabmixplus' settings. so i changed it to 5 stars cause it def. works.

There should not be a blank tab appearing when a redirect is blocked. Could you please send me a screenshot of this blank tab that is being opened? You can e-mail me at kliu@code.kliu.org

All Rogers Canada internet customers should add this to Firefox. +1 for taking over/adding functionality of defunct RedirectRemover addon.

2 suggestions for this great addon:

1. include a pre-set rule for those "shortened" URL service.

2. implement the features of "redirect remover" inn which its development is abandoned: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/537

Then, this addon is really great at tackling all "redirects" in combination with noscript.

Thank you for your suggestion and for filing a bug on this. NoRedirect takes a different approach than Redirect Remover; NR works by intercepting network responses, and RR works by modifying URL patterns. The two approaches are very different and don't have a lot of overlap, either technically or in terms of use case. NR can handle a lot of use cases that RR can't handle, and RR can handle a lot of use cases that NR can handle. The target use cases for both extensions are different and don't have a lot of overlap. A more detailed response to this particular issue can be found here: http://code.kliu.org/tracker/show_bug.cgi?id=207#c1

This is a perfect extension - doing exactly what it promises with an easy interface to add more rules.

PS! It would have been even better if the most common URL shorteners were on the default list (bit.ly, tinyurl.com, ...)

Thank you for your feedback. However, there are issues with listing the shortening services, namely that not everyone wants to block them. :) However, there are plans to make it easier to configure NoRedirect to block them. See bug 165, bug 170, and bug 179 at .

It would be nice if this extension could also control link redirects like:

I started looking for a Firefox plugin that would allow me to preview any and all shortened URLs due to a recent phishing attack on twitter. This is the only plugin that seems to do it, and does it well. I just set it up as a white list (default deny), and have been adding rules for redirects I know are safe.

I love this addon! It's a breath of fresh air to not have to deal with Roadrunner's error page redirects any more. I also like being able to screen all those shortened URLs. Just one little suggestion: lots of people don't know that they can configure addons through the addon manager, so maybe you can show a reminder when people install this for the first time?
