This extension works with FF3 if you change the maxVersion from 2.0.0 to 3.0.0 in the install.rdf.

Your guide to modifying the xpi file works beautifully.

BTW, for Mac users, Stuffit Expander works in place of 7-zip.
After changing the maxversion attribute to read "3.0.0.*", the items can be archived by selecting them all and choosing 'Create Archive of 4 items'.
Use 'Get Info' to change the name and extension of the created zip file to .xpi.
