Pedantic Picture Packer – Shrink images and documents in emails with minimal quality loss
Images in Emails
Compresses images in attachments, in the message body, and in quoted messages. You can choose a separate profile for each category.
• Modern encoders running locally as WebAssembly: Jpegli for JPEG, PNGquant (libimagequant) for PNG palettes, and OxiPNG for lossless PNG optimization.
• Automatic format selection: JPEG and PNG are both tried, and the smaller result wins.
• Converts WebP, HEIC, JPEG 2000, BMP, and non-animated GIFs into universally readable formats.
• Optional downscaling to the actual display size in the message body, with an adjustable sharpness-reserve factor for high-resolution screens. Selectable scaling methods include Lanczos, Mitchell, bicubic, and others.
• Optional removal of metadata such as EXIF, GPS location, and color profile.
• SVG optimization: removes editor clutter, shortens coordinates, and optionally simplifies curves (Douglas-Peucker).
• Adjustable minimum savings: an image is only replaced if it actually becomes smaller.
• Permanent exceptions for images that should never be modified.
PDF Attachments
• Custom PDF profiles (Highest Quality, High Quality, Size Optimized, Pedantic), freely adjustable.
• Compresses embedded images individually, with a preview and before/after size for each image.
• MRC (Mixed Raster Content) for scanned pages: text is stored as a crisp black-and-white mask (Sauvola binarization with JBIG2 encoding), while background and colors are stored as a downscaled image. Photos are preserved. The result is usually many times smaller than a normally compressed scan, with adjustable image and stamp detection.
• Optional shared JBIG2 symbol dictionary across multiple pages.
• CMYK print files are left untouched unless you explicitly allow changes.
• Document cleanup: XMP metadata, unreferenced objects, output color profiles, Illustrator/InDesign editing data, invisible content, and unused form fonts. Forms remain fillable.
• Deflate compression for page content and fonts.
• Removal of unused glyphs from embedded fonts (font cutting).
• Vector pattern matching and substitution: identical curves are stored only once, like the JBIG2 dictionary but at the vector level.
• Vector optimization for logos, graphics, and outlined text (Douglas-Peucker).
• View in page order or sorted by size, download the processed version, and restore the original with one click.

Usage and Workflow
• Simple view for everyday use, advanced view with all fine controls.
• Three sending modes: remind about unprocessed images before sending, fully manual, or fully automatic without prompts.
• Pre-compute: images are processed in the background as soon as they are inserted, so "Apply" finishes instantly.
• Parallel processing across multiple CPU cores, largest files first.
• Detailed explanations for every setting in the options menu, which can be hidden if desired.
Privacy
No internet connection is used for processing, and there is no telemetry and no cloud. All computation happens locally in Thunderbird.
