The idea behind this extension is pretty cool, but I'm afraid that it will very quickly get annoying for me without some sort of white list or black list.

Very well done. For the sake of improvement, I'll suggest an option to hide the spam count and an option to hide the status bar icon. Thanks for a great extension!
