Synchronize Evolution Data Server contacts with Thunderbird using a local Native Messaging helper.
O doplňku
EDS Contacts Integration synchronizes contacts between Evolution Data Server (EDS) and Thunderbird on Linux.
The extension uses a separately installed local helper application to communicate with EDS. The helper runs on the same computer as Thunderbird and connects to Evolution Data Server
through the local Evolution/libebook and D-Bus services.
## Features
- Synchronize EDS contacts to a Thunderbird address book.
- Create or update Thunderbird contacts from EDS.
- Optionally copy new contacts from Thunderbird’s “Evolution” address book to EDS.
- Optionally remove previously synchronized Thunderbird contacts when they disappear from EDS.
- Detect EDS changes through a local Native Messaging connection.
- Manually test the helper and start synchronization from the settings page.
- Keep synchronization disabled until the user explicitly grants consent and enables it.
## Installation
1. Install the [EDS Contacts Helper](https://github.com/ThierryHFR/eds-contacts-helper/releases).
2. Install this Thunderbird extension.
3. Open the extension settings.
4. Review and accept the local data exchange consent.
5. Enable synchronization and save the settings.
The extension can be installed without the helper, but synchronization and diagnostics will not work until the helper is installed.
## Native Messaging and data exchange
The extension communicates with the local `eds_contacts_helper` application using Mozilla Native Messaging.
Communication starts only after the user has granted consent and enabled synchronization. The diagnostic “Test helper” function also requires consent.
The extension may send the following requests to the local helper:
- `ping`: checks that the helper is available and retrieves its version.
- `diagnostics`: retrieves technical diagnostic information.
- `watch`: starts local EDS change monitoring using the configured interval.
- `listContacts`: requests contacts from EDS.
- `addContact`: sends one Thunderbird contact as a vCard for creation in EDS.
Contact vCards may contain names, email addresses, telephone numbers, postal addresses, notes, and other fields stored in the contact. The helper returns contact data and identifiers
required for synchronization.
The helper may send local status events such as `edsChanged`, `watchStarted`, and `watchError`. These events do not contain contact data.
Contact data is exchanged only between Thunderbird and the locally installed helper. The extension and helper do not send contact data, telemetry, or analytics to the developer or to a
remote service.
## Privacy and user control
Synchronization is disabled by default. Users can withdraw consent at any time by clearing the consent option and saving the settings.
The extension stores synchronization metadata locally in Thunderbird, including contact mappings, change-detection hashes, and pending locally created contacts.
No online account is required. No website authentication is required. EDS Contacts Integration does not transmit contacts over the Internet.
## Requirements
- Linux
- Thunderbird 153 or newer
- Evolution Data Server
- EDS Contacts Helper
Changes and deletions made in Thunderbird are not generally propagated to EDS, except for new contacts created in Thunderbird’s “Evolution” address book when the optional reverse
synchronization feature is enabled.
