ChiudiDuplicate Email Remover 1.5.0
di Utente Firefox 4fc034
Finds and removes duplicate emails across your Thunderbird folders using the Message-ID header for reliable matching, with a subject/sender/date/size fallback for the rare message that lacks one. Allows individual folder scan inclusion/exclusion.
Informazioni su questo componente aggiuntivo
your Thunderbird folders. It groups messages by Message-ID first and
falls back to a content fingerprint (subject + sender + size +
timestamp-to-the-minute) so copies whose Message-IDs differ because of
IMAP-side normalization quirks still get matched. A separate pass
surfaces "possible duplicates" — messages that share subject + sender +
timestamp-to-the-minute but have different Message-IDs, as with bulk
mailers that embed per-recipient tracking tokens. You review each
group, choose which copies to keep and which to remove, and the
extension then moves the removed copies to Trash, permanently deletes
them, or moves them to a folder of your choice.
The whole scan runs in a detached window that survives you clicking
away in Thunderbird, so a long scan doesn't get cancelled by checking
your Inbox.
Quick start
-----------
1. Click the DeDupe Mail toolbar icon in Thunderbird's main window.
The popup opens the folder tree, scan controls, and Options
shortcut.
2. Check the folders to include in the scan. The tree supports
cascading check/uncheck, an account filter, and a text filter to
narrow the list. Press Scan for Duplicates to start.
3. The scan runs in its own detached window with a live progress bar
and a Cancel button. You can keep working in Thunderbird. Any
duplicates found so far are shown even if you cancel.
4. Review the results. Each duplicate group shows the subject + date
of the oldest copy, with every copy listed below as KEEP (green)
or DELETE (red). Click a row to flip its KEEP/DELETE state. Each
group must always have at least one KEEP row — the extension
refuses to let you demote the last remaining KEEP, with a short
message next to the row explaining why. "Possible duplicates"
appear in their own section with all rows starting as KEEP, so
you have to explicitly mark anything for DELETE in that section.
5. For bulk cleanup: the per-folder panel above the group list has
a Delete button next to each folder holding duplicates. Press one
and every duplicate copy in that folder is marked DELETE (press
Keep to revert). Only one folder is active at a time. Review the
effect in the group list, commit via the action button, and the
results refresh in-memory so you can pick the next folder.
6. Press the Preview button on any row to open the message in
Thunderbird's native reader (a new tab or window, per your
preferences). Press Preview again to close it.
7. When the group list looks right, press the action button at the
bottom to carry out your choice: move to Trash (default),
permanent delete, or move to a folder. If any group would be
left with no copies kept, you'll get a confirm dialog naming
those messages first.
Options page
------------
Open Options from the toolbar popup's gear icon, or from
Add-ons and Themes → Duplicate Email Remover → Options.
- Keep strategy: by default the oldest copy is marked KEEP; you can
switch to newest. Applies as the initial state for every group;
you still toggle individual rows afterwards.
- Default action: Move to Trash (default), Permanent delete, or Move
to a folder (and which folder).
- Skip folder types: Drafts, Sent, Templates, Outbox, Archives, Trash
are each skipped from scans by default. Toggle any of them off if
you want those folders included. Unchecking Skip Archives shows a
warning banner about Gmail-specific data-loss risks (Gmail maps
every label to an IMAP folder plus an "All Mail" folder, which the
extension would otherwise read as many copies of each message with
non-obvious deletion semantics).
- Show possible duplicates: on by default. Turn off to hide the
second-pass section if you only care about exact matches.
- Silent mode: skip the confirmation dialog before deletion. For
power users who know what they're about to do.
- Diagnostics: when on, a detailed log of what the scan saw is
collected and auto-saved to your download folder when the scan
finishes, named by version and timestamp.
Entry points
------------
- Toolbar button (envelope-pair icon) in Thunderbird's main mail
window — opens the popup with all scan controls and results.
Primary entry point.
- Tools → "Scan for Duplicates…" — targets the folder currently shown
in the active mail tab and opens the detached scan window with just
that folder pre-selected. Also handles unified folders (as shown in
the Unified Folders pane) by expanding to each account's matching
per-account folder.
- Folder pane right-click → "Scan this folder for Duplicates" —
targets the right-clicked folder and opens the detached scan window
with just that folder pre-selected.
- Options page — Add-ons and Themes → Duplicate Email Remover →
Options.
Permissions
-----------
- storage — to save your scan settings and Options.
- downloads — to auto-save the diagnostics log to your Downloads
location when diagnostics mode is on.
- menus — to add the Tools-menu and folder-pane right-click entries
that launch a folder-targeted scan.
- accountsRead — to enumerate accounts and folders, and to know which
folder each message lives in.
- messagesRead — to read message headers for matching, and to open
messages in Thunderbird's native reader when you press Preview.
- messagesDelete — to carry out the "Move to Trash" and "Permanent
delete" actions on the copies you marked DELETE.
- messagesMove — to carry out the "Move to a folder" action on the
copies you marked DELETE.
Update history
--------------
Version 1.5.0
- New Bulk DELETE by folder workflow. After a scan, the results page
shows a per-folder breakdown of every folder with duplicate copies,
each with a Delete button. Press Delete to mark every duplicate copy
in it for DELETE (button becomes Keep — press again to revert).
Only one folder is active at a time; pressing a different folder's
Delete first reverts the previous one. When ready, the action button
at the bottom commits with your usual choice (Trash / Permanent /
Move to folder). After commit the results refresh in-memory and you
stay in bulk mode so you can keep clearing folder by folder.
- Zero-KEEP safety dialog. If any commit would leave a duplicate
group with no copies kept — meaning the message disappears from
every folder — a confirm dialog names those messages by subject
and requires explicit acknowledgement. Always on; cannot be
disabled.
- Each duplicate group's header now shows the date next to the
subject (dimmed), so two groups with the same subject but
different dates — e.g. two editions of a weekly newsletter —
are visually distinguishable at a glance.
Version 1.4.0
- Tools-menu and folder-pane menu entries. Thunderbird's Tools menu
has a "Scan for Duplicates…" item that targets the folder currently
shown in the active mail tab. Right-clicking a folder in the folder
pane has a "Scan this folder for Duplicates" item. Either entry
opens the detached scan window with just that one folder
pre-selected. Normal saved folder selection isn't disturbed; the
menu-targeted scan is a one-shot override. Handles unified folders
by expanding to each account's per-account folder of the same type.
- Added the menus permission to support the new entries.
Version 1.3.0
- New "Possible duplicates" section for messages that share subject +
sender + timestamp-to-the-minute but have different Message-IDs.
Typical case: bulk mailers with per-recipient tracking tokens that
produce semantically-identical but byte-different messages. These
appear in a separate section from exact duplicates; every row
starts as KEEP so nothing gets deleted without explicit review.
Can be turned off in Options.
- Preview now opens the message in Thunderbird's native reader (a new
tab or window, per your Thunderbird preferences) rather than in a
cramped panel inside the popup. Preview is a toggle: press once to
open, press again to close.
- Folder tree tags skipped rows with "Skipped in Options" so it's
clear where to go to change that behavior.
Version 1.2.2
- Per-row KEEP/DELETE toggle. Each row in a duplicate group is now
independently marked; tapping a row flips just that row. Each group
must still have at least one KEEP row.
- New Skip Trash option in the Options page, defaults to on. A
message you kept in one folder plus its copy in Trash would
otherwise show as a duplicate — usually not what you want.
Version 1.2.1
- Skip Archives default returned to on. Scanning Gmail's "All Mail"
and label folders with Archives included had non-obvious
deletion semantics that could cause data loss. Users who
explicitly want to include archives can still do so from Options,
with a warning banner now shown when they do.
- Folder tree hides skipped folder types so what you see is what
gets scanned.
Version 1.2.0
- Scans now survive clicking elsewhere in Thunderbird: the scan
itself runs in a detached window that doesn't close on focus loss.
Setup happens in the usual toolbar popup; only the scan is
detached.
- Cancel button during a scan. Any duplicates found so far are still
shown.
- Account filter and cascading check/uncheck toggle above the folder
tree.
Version 1.1.3
- Diagnostics mode is now a small row at the top of the popup, with
a Download diagnostics button that saves the collected log as a
text file after a scan. No more digging through the Options page
just to enable it.
Version 1.1.2
- Content-based matching added as a secondary key alongside
Message-ID. Messages are now grouped as duplicates if they share
EITHER the same Message-ID OR the same subject + sender + size +
timestamp-to-the-minute. This catches copies whose Message-ID
differs due to Thunderbird-side normalization quirks.
Version 1.1.0
- Options page: skip special folders, set default keep-strategy and
default action, silent mode for power users.
- New action: Move duplicates to a folder, alongside Trash and
Permanent delete.
- Clearer results UI: KEEP badges green, DELETE badges red. The
action button shows the exact count and action.
Version 1.0.0
- Initial release. Folder-tree checklist with cascading check/
uncheck, saved scan settings, Message-ID-based dedup with
subject/sender/date/size fallback.
