Couldn't agree more with Apollo! HTML source editing deserves at least a well-built add-on endorsed by Mozilla (if not being integrated as a built-in feature).

It sounds like it once was a good extension and some users have posted some alternatives in their reviews and it is good to see the community involved and taking action. However, this has not been updated since 2007. Mozilla probably needs to sweep their TB catalog and remove lots of dead add-ons, slow down their rapid release fiasco to ensure robust technology and encourage a new wave of add-ons for the next generation of TB and FF too.

I just thought I should add this in here.
I looked for hours for an HTML source editor that would work with 3.1, to no avail. Then I stubled upon this:
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-us/thunderbird/addon/stationery/
It's not really built just for that, but it has a really nice HTML 'View Source' style editor in it. Worth looking at if you need that.

This add-on doesn't work for me on Thunderbird 3.1.4 but I can confirm that Sighurts addon at:
https://nic-nac-project.org/~kaosmos/index-en.html
works fine - you do need to add it to the toolbar via "View > Toolbars > Customise".
Hasn't taken it upon itself to spam my address book yet... ...which makes me wonder why he's not added it officially to the add-ons site.
But it's very simple and works fine.

You can find a nice replacement here:

I used to love this add on
I installed Thunderbid 3.0.1
Now I can't find it in the menu....

There is another extension capable to rdit HTML source.
It is my extension, called "Stationery".
It also have syntax highlighting, and is capable to load external HTML file as template of new mail.

This does not work with current versions of Thunderbird, even after modifying the *.rdf.
Seems like such a loss, as we could use a utility like this - and none other exists?
The homepage for this addon is long gone, too. What happened?
This functionality is something I hope will be a standard feature of future versions of Thunderbird.

This appears to work for newer versions of Thunderbird (I have 2.0.0.12) - if you can persuade it to install.
* rename the .xpi as .zip and unzip to a folder
* with your favourite text editor open install.rdf
* alter the em:maxVersion entry to a newer version (I entered 3.0+) and save
* re-zip
* rename the .zip as .xpi and give it a whirl in Thunderbird
Needless to say you should have a recent backup of your Thunderbird profile available for safeties sake.
The interface is a little basic; it could be polished up a little. But it is a simple tool that could be very powerful indeed.

Great for making newsletters!
Can you make it available for version 2.0.
I manually changed the install.rdf and repackaged, installed and the add-on will also work in version 2 then.

This addon is so great! I just wish it would be upgraded. On my laptop, I have had it installed before thunderbird updated, and it still works (!?!). But on desktop, when I tried to install 'Edit' it said it's not compatible.
Anyway to fix this. Is it already compatible?
