I know of no other way of reading Outlook emails with attachments using Thunderbird. This is so fundamental that it should be incorporated into Thunderbird. My thanks to Aron for this add on.

This is a 'must have' add-on. It is so good that it is well worth adding a few extras to it e.g add a "Scanned" message to outgoing emails, add an X-header to incoming emails so that they can be filtered, as suggested above.
