To all looking for this functionality but compatible with multiple identities, please have a look at SendVia:

Choose your SMTP server or create a new one and use it for the current message.

SendVia aims at remaining simple. I've been happily using it for months without any problem. I use several identities, and I'm constantly moving with my Linux laptop).

SendVia is currently in addons.mozilla.org's sandbox (experiments, see https://addons.mozilla.org/fr/thunderbird/addon/10471). It needs your tests and comments!!
