The Problem
When multiple people share an IMAP email account, reading a message on one machine marks it as read for everyone. There's no way to track which messages you haven't read yet.
How Unread Tracker Solves It
This extension gives each user their own personal "unread" tag. New messages in monitored folders are automatically tagged, and the tag is removed when you view the message — just like the built-in unread flag, but personal to you.
Getting Started
1. Install the extension — the settings page opens automatically on first run
2. Set a unique tag key (e.g. "alice-unread") and display name (e.g. "Alice Unread"). Each user sharing the mailbox must use a different key.
3. Pick a tag color so you can easily spot unread messages
4. Select which folders to monitor (e.g. Inbox)
5. Click Save — you're done
Where to Find It
- Settings: Menu → Add-ons → Unread Tracker → Options (or Tools → Add-on Options → Unread Tracker)
- Tagged messages: Unread messages show your chosen tag color in the message list. You can also sort/filter by tag in Thunderbird's built-in tag column.
- Reading a message: Simply viewing a message removes your personal tag automatically.
How Tags Work on Shared Mailboxes
- Tags are stored as IMAP keywords on the server, but only visible in Thunderbird installations that have the tag configured locally.
- Other users sharing the same account will not see your tag — it's invisible to them.
- Multiple users can each have their own tag on the same message without interference.

- Thunderbird 128 or later
- An IMAP email account (tags are synced via IMAP keywords)
