It uses google dot localization... whichever country you're in. I can't find any way of forcing a google dot com search. With no shenanigans, as you say.. The results you get from google dot whatever, vs google dot com, are dramatically different.

always ".com" - Google.com (in English)

encrypted google dot com is blocked here, so it doesn't work. I just wanted to force google dot com.
the problem is now.. how do I uninstall this extension? it's not in my extensions..
