Is this Open source? On your website: [Quickfolders](https://quickfolders.org/), it is written that "QuickFolders is an open source project that is financed via annual licenses. It is based in Ireland and established as business see detail below." But, where is the source code repository?

Is this misleading?

----

Edit: Thanks for sharing the link!

This review is for a previous version of the add-on (5.9.1).

it is 100% open source (including the licensing mechanism), and the repository is on github:

https://github.com/RealRaven2000/quickfolders/

I can add the link to the technical info here and to that section of the web site, There are plenty of links to the related github issue tracker on the version page, which will also bring you to the source code.

Great addon, always working well and very useful.

But the new licensing changes really ruined it for me. I'm intentionally only using the most basic of features, things that take minutes to organize myself, and these features were moved to a license. Going to have to stop using this extension, I am in the same boat as witrak().

Edit: Took me around 30 minutes to get back the functionality of *Click tab, go to folder* that I had before, no idea why 10+ tabs is a licensed feature. No discredit to the author, there are many amazing features that work great, I just disagree with the license options. If you can't replicate the feature you want yourself, go ahead and get the license.

This review is for a previous version of the add-on (5.8.3).

I understand - if you can't afford a license right now, why don't you reach out and describe exactly which features you need - I may be able to help you out with a free license as well.

Just very brief now, received some unbelievably magicl help for my TB installation. Can only say have never been fortunate enough to receive anything else nearly equivalent. So now I'm going to hunt for the place to show my extremely grateful appreciation. Brian Turner

I use(d) QuickFolders from the very beginning when it offered a very narrow set of functions, but between them, there was the most important two - easy selection of folder to be displayed and drag-and-drop of messages to the folders which had assigned tabs. All other additional functions except those which supplemented these two were of very limited value for me. In fact, they were rather something that cluttered the interface. Nevertheless, I accepted them - it's easy to ignore something that you don't have to use.

Unfortunately, as of some days ago, the situation changed diametrally, because the Author decided to make money using well known and rather not a user-friendly method (which could be named extortion by more blunt users).
Now - without any warning - if you update the extension you will get the version for which you have to pay a yearly fee, or use a free, extremely limited variant which rightfully could be named "demo version" as it allows to serve 10 folders only.
That's true that the fee for the limited paid variant which allows serving 25 folders is really symbolic. However, the fee for the unlimited version isn't symbolic. Especially in the light of the Author's declaration that the money is for preserving further support and expansion of the extension.

I consider the Author's decision unfair. In my opinion, almost all works on the extension expanding its functionality are not necessary for most users. Thus efforts put into support of such a basic variant would be negligible in comparison with the current version. A fair solution would be to split the extension to two: basic - frozen at the level covering functions related to displaing, creating and coloring folder labels, switching folders, and moving messages to them. The rest - including toolbar, filters, and many other functions and options (which I can't even name as I never use it) could be put into PRO, paid (subscription) version.

This review is for a previous version of the add-on (5.7.2).

As I have stated repeatedly, the monetization is also necessary to keep my Add-on compatible with current versions of Thunderbird - you can easily install the previous version 5.6 and disable Add-on updates to use it for "free as in beer" forever.

Just note that I cannot keep fixing regressions caused by Mozilla for free - and the Pro Licenses do not make up for the cost. I had 3500$ of external development last year in order to make QF compatible with Tb78; there is ongoing work for being compatible with Tb91.

Most feature requests come from my users (and not just "PRO" users) and are heavily curated in order to benefit the maximum number of users. You cannot expect a complex Add-ons like this to be maintained for free as supporting and updating them + discussing with the Tb core team asking not to disable features and convert them to API functions (for example, mail extensions are still not allowed creating their own toolbar, so I am using "experimental" back end code) several days of work every week.

You can just pretend I walked away from that work and use the older version, no problem. That's not extortion. Most of my users expect free support, timely updates and that the Add-on doesn't stop working and that's what only monetization delivers.

QuickFolder me fait gagner beaucoup de temps et je pense que sans cet add-on j'aurai abandonné Thunderbird ;)
car il faut le dire, le classement et la recherche des mails n'est vraiment pas bien outillé dans la version de base de Thunderbird.

I've been using it for over two years now. It's an essential, so much easier to search a single folder for mail, or multiple ones, compared to the built in functionality.

I absolutely totally rely on Quickfolders in my work - in fact Quickfolders is the only reason I use Thunderbird! Quickfolders increases my productivity by orders of magnitude.

This add-on is indispensable for anyone using Thunderbird as their primary email client. The main feature, the folder tabs, make perfect sense as an organizing paradigm, The continued maintenance and development of the add-on is first rate. Highly recommended.

I really love this addon and I want to support the developer but I hate subscription based software.
Please set a price for a lifetime subscription or once off payment

This review is for a previous version of the add-on (5.5.2).

I will consider it, but in my experience I have to work a number of weeks on the Add-on every year to maintain and make it compatible with the ESR changes; if I hand out a permanent license to all my users I cannot guarantee to work on compatibility for free forever - of course it's also a matter of getting the price right. In the meantime there is now a Standard license which is around 5 bucks.

I highly recommend to add this suggestion to the issue tracker and then we can discuss it seriously - https://github.com/RealRaven2000/QuickFolders/issues

QuickFolders is PURE GOLD! I love it! Especially the shortcut keys of the Pro version.

I have hundreds of Thunderbird email folders. QuickFolders makes it MUCH easier to manage them all, jumping from one to another, or moving or copying messages to new folders.

No more scrolling through a massive tree of nested folders. Just type a few chars that occur at the beginning (or even in the middle) of the desired folder name, and it autocompletes. Hit Enter and you're done. Or type slash ("/") to have it show subfolders of that folder, or even to create a new subfolder on the fly, while you're moving, copying, or jumping to it. Good stuff!!

With the Pro version, Shift-M (move), Shift-T (copy), and Shift-J (jump) are awesome! I've been using Thunderbird for over a decade and Netscape Messenger for a decade before that, and I can't imagine how I got by without QuickFolders Pro.
It's "best of breed". There's nothing else anywhere near as good for managing Thunderbird folders.

The support is incredible. I've reported a few minor bugs and made LOTS of feature requests. I always get a well-considered reply within hours, and usually a bug fix or new feature within a day or two. In my 38-year career as a computer programmer, I've NEVER seen such good customer support!

I also use Shift-S (skip to next folder with unread messages). Like the native Thunderbird "n" command (move to next unread message), but skips the rest of the current folder. That's very useful when I need to catch up on unread stuff, but not necessarily in all folders.

Previously, I would have to stop hitting "n", move my hand from the keyboard to the mouse, scroll the folder tree, click below the folder I was on, and then resume hitting "n". Just hitting Shift-S is SO much quicker and easier.

There are also an amazing number of "bling" features where you can change the font, color, icons, background images, etc. for your folders and tabs. I'm a pretty boring engineer type, not a particularly artistic person. So, the "bling" features don't matter much to me. But my wife is much more artistic and loves them. I find it quite extraordinary that QuickFolders is so perfect for both types of users.

Now that I use QuickFolders, I have little use for the native Thunderbird folder tree anymore. I can hide it entirely and save lots of screen space to see my list of messages and body of the current message. And can still easily navigate/manage/create folders via QuickFolders. Excellent!

Recently, I've discovered that QuickFolders does more than just provide new features. It also allows me to modify native Thunderbird features. For example, it allows me to tell Thunderbird to not prompt before moving to the next folder when I hit "n" to see the next unread message. Nice!

Geniales Tool.

As a user of the free version of QuickFolders for a while now I have come to depend on it as an essential aid to navigating the hundreds of folders I have. For my personal email account I had for years (since 1995) been using the Forté Agent email client which had been excellent. However, sadly, there has been no update since 2014 which has made it not so useful anymore (especially with its poor HTML support).
Therefore, I made the effort to move my main account to Thunderbird, which was extremely time consuming as there was no bulk export function meaning that the messages in each of the many folders had to be selected and then saved as a raw "UNIX message text file" which could then be imported into Thunderbird. Having completed the move, I am now enjoying using TB with the added functionality provided by Quickfolders.

Axel deserves a *lot* of credit for keeping the Quickfolders add-on viable so I have taken up his 2021 Easter offer of a half-price sale for a one year registration and I'm pleased I have.

Have you looked at any of the change logs?? The popup just happens when I update the Add-ons once every few weeks, and only to "free as in beer" users without a license - you may not have noticed but since I transferred it to Thunderbird 78 last year I fixed 24 issues (please see the official github) on top of having to rewrite a ton of functionality. My work is duplicated by having to write bug fixes and improvements twice to also supprt Thunderbird 68 users. You do not get the update popup if you have a QuickFolders Pro license, which by the way is now on discounted offer. I had 3 releases since the rewrite last November and each of them had very important bugfixes.

The popup only costs you one click to close it - but it enables me to keep going and keep this very very complex Add-on compatible. Without that, the Add-on would be abandoned like so many other complicated ones. You shouldn't punish me and 20,000 users for trying to keep this Software alive. You could just disable updates and stay behind on a broken version and then you will never be bothered at all.

This is a great add-on that will definitely help you be more efficient in managing your inbox. The reason I'm writing this review is because I realized how much I relied on it now that it's not available anymore for the latest version of Thunderbird. Hoping we'll get an update soon! Thank you for this great add-on.

Thanks for your encouraging words - there already is a functional prerelease here:

make sure you follow the instructions there exactly so you can install it.

I used Quickfolders with full satisfaction untill the upgrade to the 78-version stopped this happyness! Any idear, when my happyness will be back? Hopefully pretty soon?can I get a notice on the state to kpfritz@gmx.de?

I hear you - for instant happiness. you can simply install the prereleae from here:
https://github.com/RealRaven2000/QuickFolders/releases/5.0pre119/
- you need to download the file (do not just click on it because browsers are stupid) with a right-click + save as, then drag the file from your downloads folder - or drag the file link to QuickFolders-wx-5.0pre119.xpi in the assets section below on hte page directly into THUNDERBIRD add-ons manager.
It's pretty much ready for release, I am just working on some marketing to make back the considerable expenses caused by conversion work.

Hi! When will it work under 83?

This review is for a previous version of the add-on (4.18.1).

Let's take one step at a time - we are still working on Thunderbird 78.* release and the max version doesn't currently allow higher numbers. This is because we simply do now know whether 80+ versions will permanently allow "mail extensions using experimental APIs" - which ius currently the only way to pull off all our functionality.

APIs for doing a lot of the advanced stuff need to be written first so that we can convert to a full mail add-on in the course of the year. In the meantime, try to install

https://github.com/RealRaven2000/QuickFolders/releases/tag/5.0pre116

no guarantees that it works with beta versions!
