Cleaned up all the duplicates very efficiently.

The key to making this add-on work perfectly is to adjust the comparison criteria so that you know the messages that match are truly the same as each other in spite of having small differences in the body, which can happen. Thus the number of lines could be SLIGHTLY different and the size might also. For example, you might have an extra NULL in one, or an extra <LF>. Make sure you have enough criteria so you are confident of the found matches. The tool is great.

Like the title says. Does what it's supposed to, and more quickly than expected.

After some experimentation, resolved the problem I experienced in my previous review. And as a result, upped the rating to 4/5 stars. Not 5 stars as that problem and its work-around are not obvious.
The problem is that when you first install the addon and try to use it (either before or after restarting Thunderbird 17.0.x), it does not detect POP account "Trash" folders properly. In the Duplicate Messages Deletion window that appears after detecting dups, at the bottom are the choices "Delete permanently" and "Move to...(drop down list of folder choices)". "Move to..." defaults to "Trash". But leaving that choice alone, it will not properly detect the Trash folder on the account you are detecting dups on, unfortunately. Which means dup messages get permanently deleted, even if you don't want them to be.
To avoid this problem, you first have to open the drop down list beside "Move to..." and manually select the Trash folder for the account you are detecting dups on. Then and only then will your dup messages get properly sent to Trash. In the future it will remain properly selected, so you only have to do it once. Don't know if you have to manually change it for every account you are working on, but I do so to be safe.
This is still a problem and still needs fixing, but at least there is a way around it until its fixed.
EDIT: replying to the author response below. Thanks for the response, but unfortunately you totally misunderstand what the problem is. I elaborated more in my original review linked to at the bottom of this post; might want to look at it.
The problem has _nothing_ to do with "detecting duplicates in trash". The problem is when detecting duplicates in the INBOX of a selected account, the "Move To..." selection defaults to "Trash" (of that account). And by default, it doesn't actually move your messages to there as you would expect. It instead wrongly permanently deletes them.
To work around this problem, you must manually select the "Move To..." folder (Trash or otherwise) for each account in the drop down list.
If you don't do that and instead rely on the default "Move To...Trash" location without adjusting anything manually, your mail gets permanently deleted out of the Inbox when you didn't want it to after pressing "OK". That's the problem.
Practically all users expect Trash folders to be skipped when looking for duplicates. This is both because dupes are usually deleted to the trash (incl. manual deletion), and because, more generally, whatever's in the trash is already not really part of your mailbox, it's deleted-but-undisposed-of. So, it would certainly not be a good idea to change this default behavior.
I understand you might like/expect something different, but you must recognize you're in the minority. For you (and others), there's the preferences dialog with which you can change such settings.

Just great! Used it to split messages I already had transferred in an aborted bulky transfer. Could resume just fine! :)
I'd donate if the donate functionality wasn't broken. After I fill in the amount and comment, the main page is grayed out but no paypal page comes up....
If for some reason the contribute link doesn't work (it works for me), then just email me and I'll send you a payment link.

This add on is a life saver. I depend in it a lot.
It will be awesome if it works automatically every period of time

Saved my life, thank you _so_ much.
One suggestion. In Options, comlement the ability to compare "Number of Lines in Message" with the ability to compare "Number of Lines in Message _Body_". That way when we have two messages with a different number of headers, we can ignore the difference.

Very useful tool. Thanks!
One detail: the selection dialog proposes to move the deleted copies to Trash. However, I am using several accounts, and therefore several disctinct Trash folders. I was surprised to find al the deleted copies in the Trash of my Local Folders. Is it normal?

Yes.

OK I see, at least for "size" which is what I need. Thanks

This extension is definitely one of the best out there. I've just migrated from Thunderbird to Postbox and was disappointed that it isn't compatible :-(

nice idea, works ok.
This review is for a previous version of the add-on (0.3.7).When using the number of lines as a comparison criterion, such two messages are indeed not dupes of each; if you remove this from criterion they will probably be determined to be dupes.
Also, there is a quick way to change the dupe check settings: Add the menubutton to the toolbar.

I think this alternate and the original both find the same duplicates when same options are used, I tested it on TB6. The trick is that this alternate version has even more options to search duplicates and some little things that make the life easier, mainly: resizeable window, clearer interface & recycle/delete option. Although it is marked as incompatible, it works perfect on TB6.
This review is for a previous version of the add-on (0.3.7).Well, they're not so little, these things... for example, being able to sort by different comparison criteria affords you control over which message you would like to keep out of each set.
Anyway, the biggest difference, albeit not one visible to the user, is the fact that removedupes (alternate) is _Free_Software_. That means you have the legal right to improve upon it if I, say, get a job and don't have time to work on it.

If you use IMAP, sometimes you copy twice the same emails. This software helps you to solve this matter, saving server space.

This is one of the best thunderbird addons I came accross! Its easy, intuitive and fast. It just works and never ever gave me any trouble. A very fine job!
There is one suggestion that I have though. Sometimes I need to copy (or move) large amounts of local mail to an imap folder. This often fails during the process because the copy function of thunderbird just isnt awesome. At that stage, some of the mails i selected have been copied, others havent and I have to start all over again because there is no way to tell which messages already made it to the server and which havent. The bad thing is that even when moving the messages, Thunderbird first copys all of them and then deletes the source, but only if the copy process was successfull.
Would there be any chance to modify removedupes, so that it can display dupes OR siglets. This would enable one to select all the messages that havent been copied/ duplicated yet. this would make removedupes also the only sync plugin for thunderbird and help out so many people struggeling with this poor TB copy function. This would be something that I am looking for for years and years!

Works pretty well, haven't had any issues yet and removed a ton of duplicates (especially in one of my RSS feeds). The only thing I've found thus far that I don't like is that the it's a little bit of a pain to setup. Perhaps adding a button with a dropdown menu that provides options. Included in that could be an option to scan all folders (since I don't keep all my email in one global folder I have to select the different main folders for each account).
This review is for a previous version of the add-on (0.3.5). This user has a previous review of this add-on.You could just select the single 'Account Folder', the parent of the account's main folders (Inbox, Sent, etc.) - that works too.
As for a button - if every extension put its options in a button you would have endless clutter...

Works great.

Works wonderfully as promised (and fast!) on Thunderbird 2.0.0.24
I like the way you can preview emails before deleting them.
First time using this, so I checked every email selected to see if they were duplicates.
Not a single false positive.
Thank you!

worked great! exactly what I needed! Thank you very very much! The search is very fast, the search result window shows you very clear information to make sure what you will delete is really what you want to delete, and the extra options are very wise. Great
