Works perfectly. This has not been updated for some time but nice to have a proper English language dictionary instead of the usual American slang!

The British English version works fine for me using Thunderbird 2.0.0.23 on my PC. Excellent I'd say!

Be aware!
I upgraded to Thunderbird 2.0.0.17 (Mac), and now my british-english dictionary is "not compatable" so I can't spell-check my emails.

At the moment I have US English on Firefox browser and I have installed this plug-in. Still my web pages show errors to words in British English at http://www.expertcore.org/. Can you please let me know how to set this permanently on my PC.

I have reviewed this add-on before in June 2009 but re-reviewing as I see a lot of people are having compatibility problems, however it works (and always has) fine for me.
It worked on Fx 2 versions, Fx 3.0.x versions and also Fx 3.5.x versions. At the minute I am using Firefox 3.5.3 [Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.9.1.3) Gecko/20090824 Firefox/3.5.3] and it's working perfectly - it also installed perfectly!
The *only* problems with installing I have had is one time when many add-ons would not install from AMO (don't know why) but it did the next day. I have always used it on Windows XP and Vista using the en_US version bar a couple of times I used the en_GB version, dictionaries installed on that too and it would NOT install on an old Netscape Navigator (9.0.0.6) either. Best bet is to ask for help at the MozillaZine forums.
I still maintain it is an excellent dictionary. It does need an update as dictionaries are constantly being amended and added to but this contains more than enough to get by for day to day usage. You might need a more comprehensive one if your into writing essays for collage / university etc.

It is still incompatible with Thunderbird 2.0.0.23.(Windows)
I hope this changes as soon as possible!

Sorry but this does not open after being downloaded. Must be the new 3.5.3.

I loved the british dictionary and used it every time i had firefox...until I updated to the latest version, now it isn't compatable and I won't know if I made mistakes or not.

I find this crashes Privacy Browsing, even to the extent that all I have to do is roll-over the menu option for FFv3.5.2 to fall over. I disabled it and now everything's fine.
I really need an English dictionary!

Good, but not perfect. It can't quite cope with my dyslexic spelling.
For instance "definatly" only gives the options: "defiantly" and "definably".
It needs to recognise how a word sounds, not just the misplacement of a few letters.

As a big fan of the British Dictionary add-on, I was miffed when a recent TB upgrade to version .22 disabled it.
I'm happy to say that RaiHil's advice is spot-on and that the dictionary can be made to work as per RaiHil's instructions. The install.rdf that worked for me is:

@Jillie Ace
It is for spell checking text boxes/web forms etc. After installing any incorrectly entered text in text boxes and web forms are underlined and if the word is highlight and right clicked a menu shows with suggested corrections.
There is a spellbound extension which improves spellchecking and makes it more like older versions of FF as they used spellbound too.

Can't install under Thunderbird 2.0.0.22 German (only compatible with 2.0a1 to 2.0b2)
Quick and Dirty - Workaround:
1.Open the xpi with e.g. WinRar, extract and edit "install.rdf"
2.change the values of the first and/or second entry of e.g. from 2.0b1 to 2.5
3.save
4.replace the original install.rdf in the xpi.
5. Install the Addon in TB
