this wasn't for me, with a lot of different accounts already the way this sorted things out wasn't much to my liking. So I was quite pleased that on uninstall everything went back exactly as it was except marking a lot of read emails as unread.
Which means, give it a try,

Does enough nice things and makes some nice cosmetic changes that I'd like to use it, but when I installed on TB 8.0 it basically killed a number of functions.
-The forward and back buttons on the Email toolbar were disabled.

-TB ignored an option setting so that it always closed the email tab when I deleted a message rather than go to the next message.

-If you select to "send and archive" it doesn't save a copy of the email in the originating folder even though that option is set in the accounts settings.

-When I attempted to disable the add-on and switch to the default appearance it didn't. I had to start TB in the special mode for disabling all add-ons to get back to the default appearance, then enabled one add-on at a time until I figured out that it was this one that caused the problems.

The key feature I was looking for was to have all of my conversation, including sent messages and deleted messages, available whenever a new message came in for a conversation. This saves me from having to keep messages lying around in my inbox just because someone *might* respond to a previous message and continue the conversation. This plugin delivers on that front. Yeah!

What I don't like is the way it radically changes the UI. The Gmail UI that it imposes on you is not bad, but it clashes with Thunderbird's existing UI. For example, I *like* TB's tree view of conversations better than Gmail's flat view. The changed interface also makes it hard to find the reply-all and forward buttons (it actually DISABLES TB's native buttons for conversations with more than one message in them). It would be nice if it gave you a choice: classic TB vs. Gmail interface. The developer clearly spent a lot of time working on the interface; sorry to be so negative about it, but if I wanted Gmail, I'd use their web interface instead of TB.

This extension also slows down TB, a lot. Whether that slowdown is due to the conversation indexing engine or the UI, I don't know, but it is irritating.

I'm keeping it turned on for now, until I get used to the trade-offs. We'll see whether I keep it on.

This is a great addon. One problem is the sent replies were missed in the conversation pane after upgrading to Thunderbird 8.0. Does anyone else account this problem?

This is an very very useful extension. However, there seems a little problem:

I tried to download a .tar.gz attachment several times. Conversations said its size is 16KB, but the downloaded size is 8.1KB. That goes on in everytime.

Then I disabled Conversations and try again, the full copy of the attachment downloaded and extracted.

Hi,

Can you install the latest Thunderbird release from ftp://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/thunderbird/nightly/ and tell me if the problem still appears? If so, please file a new issue at https://github.com/protz/GMail-Conversation-View/issues

Thanks,

I miss the basic features of the classic reader which has the "reply all" and "forward" button in the top of the pane. There is no "reply all" and the "forward" can only be reached by scrolling to the end of the message.

11/16/2011 update:
I installed the latest version but the latest version still does not have the features I detailed above. Some emails show three new buttons for "reply", "reply all", and "forward" on the bottom of the message to the left. About 10% of the mails have this the remaining are not affected. Having the buttons on the bottom forces you to scroll through the body of the email to forward or to reply all.

This has been fixed in the upcoming version, which is available at http://jonathan.xulforum.org/files/gcv-nightlies/201111101412-2.2+.xpi

I really like the idea of conversations where you can easily see what you replied to a certain message in your inbox. Unfortunately I don't like the UI of this particular plugin.
* You can't directly see who a message is sent to
* You can't directly see the forward button of a message
* Can't add a sender to your personal address book by clicking a star next to the name
* The inline reply window feels too small
* The key combo's don't seem to work perfectly anymore
* Although it says it comes bundled with a dutch translation there was no way to change it's locale from english to dutch (even though my tb is dutch)
* after uninstallation the message columns were changed from the default so it didn't perfectly restore my tb

Although I do think this addon has a lot of potential, it feels a little bit like a beta (not a 2.x). I hope these items will be fixed sometime so I can use this addon again. Especially the UI makes it feel a bit like a (cluttered) website inside thunderbird.

Suddenly finding all my sent mail listed in my unified inbox was a bit of a shock as I use it to unify several e-mail accounts and I send a lot of information messages that require no response. After I found out how to turn that feature off (the key step of expanding the folder trees is missing from the FAQ instructions and not immediately obvious from the 'select fold(s)' user interface) I found the add-in worked well and was really useful for following threads. Best to check compatibility with other add-ons you use before installing.

I would have expected the add-on to behave like the gmail conversations in the way it physically groups them together, but it doesn't. This is what I like most about the conversations feature of gmail because it keeps the inbox nice and tidy. Future versions of this add-on should work on including this part as it's really the most valuable feature of conversations. Unfortunately without this feature this add-on is not useful for me.

EDIT: View > Sort By > Threaded works perfectly! Rating upgraded :)

Have you given, in the menus, View > Sort By > Threaded a try?

Looks better than regular TB, and adds some nice functionality, but having your 'Sent' messages in the Inbox is a deal killer. The instructions in FAQ are also incorrect

Very good extension! Give you full conversations messages, instead show you only messages per conversation included in the same folder (that is what Thunderbird does by default), and beautiful!

Only one thing: It needs compatibility with the Thunderbird per-folder option 'no-conversations', because now this option is discarted by the extension.

This is a good addon. Performance and stability are fine. Unfortunately, it doesn't allow reply and quoting only the selected text, which I have reluctantly decided I value more than conversation view.

I was using Evolution or VirtualBox running Windows / Outlook in order to connect to and interact with my companies old Exchange 2003 server. I switched to Thunderbird and was barely managing until I installed Conversations 2. Now everything works great!!! Thank you!

Thanks for writing this add-on! Makes working with emails more effective and enjoyable. It doesn't mess up my calendar invitations here (I use Thunderbird 7.01 with Lightning 1.0b7, Thunderbird Conversations 2.1.1 and LookOut 1.2.13).

The visual is clean and do what it is intended.

However, Be warned.... If you have Lightning installed Conversations will cripple invitations form iCal. After i've installed iCal i lost the buttons to accept or decline an iCal Invitation.

Please fix this............. It is a severe bug... since it messes with an important feature that many people use

In my Windows machine I had to turn it off. To be frank, the entire Thunderbird 7 was slow and I had to go back to 3.15. But if TB was slow, Conversations killed it completely.
In Ubuntu it is fast as lightning and I enjoy working with the add-on very much. It saves a lot of time searching for related emails.
Very helpful add on! Thanks!

Some things that need improvement:
- Country Lookup is a very useful add-on and it doesn't work with conversations.
- Some Thunderbrowse preferences do not behave correctly (e.g. middle click doesn't open an external browser)
- sometimes attachments disappear and later re-appear
- showing the sender's email client graphically (using Display User Mail Agent add-on) is disabled and there is only textual mention of it in the details (which are closed by default).
