It works like a charm; it's one of the few *needed* add-ons in my setup. I know that TB has native CalDAV now, but it does not sync tasks, which is a basic feature for me. The author is nice and responsive, which is also a big plus!

TEMPORARY WORKAROUND FOR THUNDERBIRD 157

Until the developer releases an official update, Provider for Google Calendar can still work with Thunderbird 157 by changing the maximum supported Thunderbird version inside the installed extension.

This procedure is for Windows and assumes Provider for Google Calendar is ALREADY installed.

IMPORTANT:
- Close Thunderbird completely before modifying anything.
- Make a backup of the extension file before editing it.
- This is only a temporary workaround.

STEP 1 - Open your Thunderbird profile folder

1. Start Thunderbird.
2. Open the menu ☰ at the top right.
3. Go to:
Help > Troubleshooting Information
4. Find "Profile Folder".
5. Click "Open Folder".

A Windows Explorer window will open.

STEP 2 - Close Thunderbird

Completely close Thunderbird before continuing.

STEP 3 - Open the extensions folder

In the profile folder, open:

extensions

Inside you will see one or more files ending in:

.xpi

STEP 4 - Find the Provider for Google Calendar XPI file

The file name may not clearly say "Provider for Google Calendar".

If necessary, open the XPI files with 7-Zip and look at the manifest.json file until you find the correct extension.

STEP 5 - Make a backup

Copy the correct .xpi file somewhere safe before modifying it.

STEP 6 - Open the XPI with 7-Zip

1. Right-click the .xpi file.
2. Choose:
7-Zip > Open archive
3. Find:

manifest.json

You do NOT need to rename the XPI to ZIP or extract the whole extension.

STEP 7 - Edit manifest.json

Open manifest.json with a text editor such as Notepad.

Search for:

"strict_max_version": "156.*"

Change it to:

"strict_max_version": "157.*"

Do not change anything else.

Save the file.

STEP 8 - Save the modified file back into the XPI

If 7-Zip asks whether you want to update the archive, click YES.

Make sure manifest.json remains directly at the root of the XPI archive.

STEP 9 - Restart Thunderbird

Start Thunderbird again.

In my case, Thunderbird did not take the change into account immediately. I had to close and open Thunderbird a second time before the extension worked.

So if it still appears incompatible after the first restart, close Thunderbird completely and start it again once more.

That was enough for me, and Provider for Google Calendar then worked normally with Thunderbird 157.

This is only a temporary workaround until the developer releases an official update.

Not working on Thunderbird 157? Here's a workaround that works.

Thunderbird 157.0.1 disables this add-on because it's outside the supported version range, and Tasks sync also fails on 157.

Workaround: use Thunderbird Portable 115.18.0 (the last 115 ESR release) from PortableApps.com:
1. Download "Thunderbird Portable Legacy 115 - 115.18.0" from the Legacy Editions page.
2. Install it and create a NEW profile (don't reuse a profile already opened by 157).
3. Install Provider for Google Calendar from this page. On the add-ons site, set "Works with" to "Any Thunderbird" if it's hidden.
4. Add your calendar via Calendar > New Calendar > On the Network > Google Calendar and sign in.
5. Disable auto-update in Config Editor (app.update.auto = false, app.update.enabled = false), otherwise it will update itself to a newer version and break again.

No manifest editing or signature changes needed.

Caveat: 115 only received security patches up to Dec 2024, so be careful with untrusted links and attachments. This is a stopgap until the developer releases a version that supports 157.

Thanks to Philipp for maintaining this add-on.

Support this essential extension with a very small donation. I've already done so.

I too have lost calender with the 157 update. I see people suggesting adjusting the strict_max_version parameter in manifest.json.

Where is manifest.json?
What do you adjust the strict_max_version parameter to?
Can you just change the parameter and begin using Firefox and calendar? Or is there more to it?

Thanks for any help.

Hi everyone,
I need support regarding the Provider for Google Calendar add-on. I am no longer able to sync or manage my Google Tasks on Thunderbird 157.0.1 (64-bit).

The tasks fail to update with my Google account, which is completely blocking my daily workflow across multiple activities.

Account permissions and cookies are correctly configured. Has anyone experienced this same issue with tasks on this version, or found a fix?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Sorry... I went through the whole procedure again... this time, everything worked perfectly!!!!

Thank you very much!

Hi,

"The extension works fine with version 157 after adjusting the strict_max_version parameter in manifest.json."

I modified this setting in the manifest.json file.

I re-compressed the archive and saved it in XPI format.

When I start the installation in Thunderbird, I get an error message: "Provider for Google Calendar could not be installed because it is not compatible with Thunderbird 157.0.1."

What should I do, please?
Many thanks,
Richard

Don't work with last versión of Thunderbird 157.0.1. My Google tasks can't sync anymore. I hope for a new update compatible with 157.0.1. Thanks for your work.

Doesn't seem to work. After entering my e-mail address it gives me a link to use to login via OAuth, and when approved it returns a 404 and the account is not logged in.
