timing out via Libre often. requires too many steps (would prefer one click). For Libre, it requires setting up reverse proxy as HTTP didn't connect. Models don't auto detect language. Dual translation would help (if source=target=>choose a specific target).

thanks for feedback.
re HTTP, "Privacy Translator for Thunderbird" works via same HTTP address. But it's fixable. To be fair, the hint in the settings suggests HTTP to the users - if HTTPS is really not supported, maybe it'd be good to change the text "Enter your self hosted ..." (minor)
Yep the Timeout is 10sec, that's a problem even on a powerful server. Apparently Docker tends to wake up slower on first translation. Not that I loved >10sec, but consecutive translations drop to 5sec.
Please make a note about reverse translation, that's the holy grail of language selection logic, present in many apps. If text language is same as target, and there's nothing to do, translator can decide to flip the direction and translate back OR to the source language (or a fallback language e.g.English if unknown due to autodetect).
Thanks a lot!
Hi,
Thanks a lot for taking the time to share such detailed feedback!
Regarding your points:
- HTTP / Reverse proxy: Plain HTTP requests to remote IPs are strictly blocked by Thunderbird’s Gecko engine for security reasons (secure context policy). So you definitely did the right thing by setting up HTTPS or a reverse proxy—that’s the standard and required way to connect to an external server, and I have no control over that platform restriction.
- LibreTranslate timeout: I will increase the default timeout in the next update to give self-hosted setups on modest hardware more breathing room.
- 1-Click translation: That’s actually an idea I’ve had in mind for a while! I plan to add it as an optional setting in the preferences, so anyone who wants immediate translation can turn it on without cluttering our clean banner interface.
I’m counting on you to come back and test the upcoming updates so we can keep making this open-source project thrive together!
See you soon,

Hi again!
Update: v2.4.1 has just been submitted to ATN for review (and is already live on GitHub if you're impatient!), and honestly, your feedback was the blueprint for this release.
First, hat tip to you regarding plain HTTP: you were 100% right! Fixing the MV3 host permissions unlocked direct HTTP connections for local/LAN servers - no reverse proxy needed anymore.
Here is what v2.4.1 brings to your setup:
- 1-Click & Zero-Click modes: Translate immediately on button click, or let it auto-translate on email open (for all foreign languages or only the specific ones you check).
- 60s Timeout for Local/Docker: Bumped from 10s to 60s so your LibreTranslate Docker container can wake up peacefully on the first run.
- Offline Local Language Detection (CLD2): Uses Thunderbird's built-in offline detector (with smart signature/quote stripping) to feed the exact source language to LibreTranslate & local LLMs that don't support "auto".
- The "Holy Grail" Dual Translation (30+ languages): If an email is already in your main language, it automatically flips to your chosen fallback/alternate target language.
Thanks again for pushing the project forward - I can't wait to hear how v2.4.1 runs on your setup once you test it!
