I've taken my first steps into coding TB Extensions by making a private clone of this one to play around with.. admittedly using AI to make the code changes.. but its let me test out some ideas. I wouldn't publish publicly as I have no idea what the AI really did with the code and I would not call myself a strong enough developer to go through it solidly.. but I do know it seems to work for me.
One thing I had it add, which might be considered for the real extension here:. On the results page, I had it add a "Set all to KEEP" button.
And then also I added a Filtering string text box and "Apply filter as Delete" button. What that does is let me then apply Delete selections in bulk to emails in folders that match a text string. The two options combined mean I can detect -> play safe (keep all) -> delete emails from specific folders. This is because I had large numbers of duplicates and named the folders in a way that I know which ones I'd want to remove from first.
I'd be happy to share info on the changes to the private version.
This is a great extension and is saving me days of effort to dedupe emails.
Thanks again for a very complete review with update ideas. Here's my take on your ideas which may be incorporated in the next version:
1. "Set all to KEEP". I think that's just a reversal of the normal process. The user may still have to go through each duplicate but now has to mark each one for deletion. While that's safer, most will be deleted, not kept.
2. I implemented your text filter method into a bulk email deletion by folder option that is, I think, cleaner and easier to use.
Look for the next update, and I'll look forward to your comments.
Version 1.5.0
- New Bulk DELETE by folder workflow. After a scan, the results page
shows a per-folder breakdown of every folder with duplicate copies,
each with a Delete button. Press Delete to mark every duplicate copy
in it for DELETE (button becomes Keep — press again to revert).
Only one folder is active at a time; pressing a different folder's
Delete first reverts the previous one. When ready, the action button
at the bottom commits with your usual choice (Trash / Permanent /
Move to folder). After commit the results refresh in-memory and you
stay in bulk mode so you can keep clearing folder by folder.
- Zero-KEEP safety dialog. If any commit would leave a duplicate
group with no copies kept — meaning the message disappears from
every folder — a confirm dialog names those messages by subject
and requires explicit acknowledgement. Always on; cannot be
disabled.
- Each duplicate group's header now shows the date next to the
subject (dimmed), so two groups with the same subject but
different dates — e.g. two editions of a weekly newsletter —
are visually distinguishable at a glance.

The app is not yet hooked into the Tools menu when a folder is selected.
When I select a Thunderbird folder, this app should automatically apply to it only, I should not have to separately *search* for and select the same folder in this app's popup.
I will wait for the add-on "Remove Duplicate Messages" which is properly integrated into Thunderbird to work again (disabled on 157.0.1 evidently due to a Tbird compatibility bug).
Pretty unfair to rate an add-on because it doesn't mimic some other developer's add-on methodology (and doesn't even currently work!) instead of asking for additional capability. Notwithstanding that, the latest update incorporates your comments. I will expect an updated review.

This is the best one among the duplicate removal i can find. Some others cant find enough duplicate mails
