The latest available version (0.3.2) is not compatible with Thunderbird 3.1, and it doesn't look like the author has been active with this addon for a long time. So, I unzipped the XPI and edited the install.rtf file to change the maxVersions variable from 3.0 to 3.1 -- then put it back together it installed without a hitch and worked fine for me.

It's a very good and helpful add-on. It's a pity, that is still not available for Thunderbird 3.1.

Works for me with Thunderbird 3.0.4 and Lightning 1.0b1 in Linux. At first it installed but would not export file upon exit. Repeated - still would not work. Unzipped the .xpi file, opened install.rdf with text editor, changed em:maxVersion to ="9.0pre" in both locations. Zipped up the open files(but not the folder they were unzipped into) and renamed that to the original .xpi file name. Reinstalled and it works.
Seems to work very well based on a couple of trials.

with this fix you are able to export on close.

I can install the add-on and configure it, but it does not copy anything on quit. Neither can I install an 'export' button in the toolbar, there is no such button available when I select 'customize toolbar'.

with the next version it will work.

It seems delete events are not delete from the ical exported file on sunbird exit/export/whatever. Only when a new event is added and exported will the old deleted events be erased.
Which is a bit dumb

With version 1.0b1 of Lightning and version 3.0.4 of Thunderbird, this addon doesn't export at close. Any pb of compatibility ?

Note: First time I installed this a while ago, it appeared to do nothing. After installing this you have to do a View, Toolbars, Customize to drag the button(s) to toolbar. Pressing arrow on right of button allows for choosing how often to auto save.

A very handy piece of software.
I no longer need to individually save thousands of emails. Once they are saved the email is an individual file on a drive, just the way I like it.

You can get an update of this extension from the author's homepage. Keep in original language to download.
author should have mentioned this with notes.

For those that may be looking for an update for Sunbird 0.9, follow to homepage and download. Leave the german text or will not work.

Sehr gutes Add-On. Danke für die neue Version 0.31, die auch mit Sunbird 0.9 zusammenarbeitet.
Vorsicht! Auswählen mehrerer Kalender funktioniert nicht. Entweder ALLE anklicken oder nur einen auswählen. Dennoch: ein Spitzentool! Danke vielmals!

Great. Does what it says it does.
it really automatises the task of creating a backup of your calendar (and that is the kind of task I usually forget when I format my computer) Works perfectly, I suggest adding a button to the calendar in thunderbird to the end of establishing how often you want to create a backup (12 hours recommended).

This is a really useful add-on! I would appreciate if it would run with Sunbird 0.8.
This add-on is so useful (and not just a nice gimmick) that it should
be not an add-on, but be integrated in Sunbird itself!

Danilo, I've got this working under 0.8
If you have a .deb based system (like my Ubuntu) there is a .deb package with a tweaked version of Automatic Export included. It's at

Before you install this package, uninstall Automatic Export from your Addons, otherwise two extensions with the same version number will conflict. I also uninstalled my previous Sunbird, but this may not have been necessary.
For those on non-.deb systems, there is also a .tar.gz file available there, but I've not tried it and don't know if it contains the extension as well.

I guess this falls under the heading, "You never really appreciate something until it's gone," but I love this extension. I use it to keep my Sunbird calendar updated on my iPod. It's very simple and works very well. Unfortunately, 0.2.3 isn't compatible with the newer version of Sunbird. I hope the author will release an update to make it compatible.
