OK, since any answer comes from the dev I give my contribution for this question.
I've made extensive tests using both native remote calendar subscription and this extension.
The main difference (but not the only) I found, and it's fundamental, is that native subscription access the Google Calendar in read only mode, while the extension gives full write access.
It seems to works quite well

As in title. Why would we have to prefer this addon instead of subscribing natively remote calendar with Lightning?

What's the advantage of using this plug-in versus natively using Google's CalDAV prototcol to access my Google calendar?
I don't get yet why one would need this plug-in ???
Google only recently added CalDAV access to Google Calendar. This plugin was created back in 2006/2007, where there was no other possibility than to use the API. I am also working on improving the CalDAV provider to work with Google, eventually this addon will provide any extra configuration options usually not available with CalDAV calendars (i.e adding guests and settings ACLs)
Also, Google's CalDAV support is not considered production ready, last I looked.

Really promising but a offline mode is clearly missing (ability to see events in the remote calendar is here but there is no way to update it or create new event in the google calendar while on the go).

Wow! This is so useful, and I've always written down everything I needed to do but then ended up elsewhere and needed remote access to my lists, sending myself emails but this is like a Godsend

I saw today in google labs that Google released a Tasks application. Might be a nice to include in this plugin.

Very useful addon for all Google Agenda users.
Bidirectionnal sync work great.
Only 4 stars, because multiple agenda syncing causes a global thunderbird sloawdown every minute or so.
As a workaround, it would be interesting to be able ton configure frequency

This add-on fulfills an import role for anyone who wants to be able to write to their Google Calendar from within Lightning.
Unfortunately, once you're done creating your calendars, and then de-select "check for new calendars", and you then add another Google Calendar you want to write to, there seems no way get the dialog back that upgrades the new calendar for write access.
Perhaps the add-on should not self-activate on Thunderbird load (it's annoying and unintuitive once you calendars are upgraded), but rather either activate when a new Google calendar is created, or when initiated by the user (via add-on Options or a right-click on a Calendar).

I've not noticed any of the slow down some other have mentioned. Then again, I just started using Google calendar so I've not had any problems with it so far.
Great plug in, recommending it to all my co-workers who also use Thunderbird.

A number of people have had problems with Thunderbird slowing to a crawl with this add-on installed. I had the same problem. As a temporary fix, I put all my calendars in "read-only" mode for normal use. When I need to edit, I deselect the "read-only" and edit away. A bit cumbersome, but it works for now until this add-on can mature a bit.

seems to work great when syncing calendars, however, it also appears to slow down thunderbird and when typing an email or just maneuvering around, it seems to cause thunderbird to stall for a few seconds.
