Definitely the best Add-on for Thunderbird. I hope it will be updated to future TB-versions. Many thanks to the author for his work!

Thank you so much! This is by far the best add on available.

This, in combination with the addon Mnenhy, means you can remove the lame buttons from the headers AND you can display the exact headers you want to display. The only problem, and why I give it 4 stars, is that if you hit the - to collapse the header to one line, then hit the + to renable the header, it is blank. You have to select another message, then re-select the previous message, to see the headers again.

Why do I have to install a plugin to get this functionality? This should really be part of the core functionality, because the default header view just wastes a lot of screen estate!

Please update for TB 3.1.* because it not works correct with this version. In the preview of a mail the button "other actions" works, but when I open a mail in this position the button "other actions" in the header has no function (please excuse my bad english)
Esta análise é para uma versão anterior do extra (1.2.1).Which version of CompactHeader are you using? Operating system? Any messages in the error console?
Could you please go to the support thread at mozillazine.org and post a more detailed description of the problem.

1.2.0 seems to actually hide the headers when the +/- symbol is clicked. Thunderbird needs to be restarted after doing this to make the headers visible again.

I has been waiting for this function of add-on. Thanks.

Works great! Exactly what I was looking for.

Excellent! Without this add-on, I would be very tempted to revert back to an older version of T-bird.
This should be built-in. I cant imagine what type of user habits would benefit from that big clump of wasted space at the top of each message. Maybe a desperate L-user who forwards or replies to every message?

Thank goodness for this add on. This really should be a built in functionality, though. I can't understand why anyone would think we'd want to give up the ability to hide the headers.

Give me more usable real estate!!! I don't need fluff & I don't need pretty-pretty things. I don't want a lot of white space, I want function. I was horrified when TB started crashing & I had to update to fix it. I installed 3.x & lost real estate to some useless white space & buttons. If I want to reply to a message, I can hit ^R. Why do I have to have a button, in every message?
The subject is in the preview pane above this message, why waste space repeating that here? I know the email addy by the folder it's in & the content of the message, why waste space on it? Do I need to know who a return message would go to, while I'm reading the message???? NO, I don't! I have a pretty good idea to whom the message was addressed, since it's sitting on my computer. Why waste all that real estate telling me stuff I either don't care about or already know?
I'm hoping this add-on w/ reduce the useless header info that some silly programmer, who had to show off put in my face.

I've been looking for something like this for weeks -- for as long as I've been using T 3.x The way T 2.x handled headers was far superior.
I don't want the row of buttons above the message -- I want them at the top of the application. CompactHeader gets me back to how I prefer to use Thunderbird.
A minor minor point: the way Thunderbird 2.x handled this looked a bit better and seemed overall more efficient. If CompactHeader moves back to what we had then, so much the better (though I'm happy enough with what it delivers now).

thank you jmozmoz, I'm one more that can't understand how come this functionality didn't make it in the regular distribution. Even though I typically use a big 2.3 Mpx screen, I use all of it and have none to spare.

Thanks for this. One updates regularly in the hope of more secure, stable base code, but It's so frustrating when the new version is so wastefule of screen real estate! I can concentrate on my messages again, instead of the user interface elements!
Now, how do I stop the tab bar showing when there's only one tab, and get rid of those pointless stars against email addresses, whatever they're for!

No idea about the stars (they indicate whether an email address is already in the address book)

This is great but I would like to be able to customize the 1-line view. I have to use the 2-line view to get what I really want (the buttons), whereas the 1-line view contains nothing I really want because it's all visible up in the thread pane. Also I agree with other reviewers that the spacing is still too generous and could be compacted a bit more. However, THANK YOU for restoring this functionality to TB. It's absolutely critical for netbook users.

Absolutely necessary addon!
THANX!

neat, you truly made my day!! Not only more practical but a damn sight prettier too. The two liner as icing on the cake.
(to the tb guys and dolls, I know you mean well but like the "old" address bar in ff, "if it works, rather not fiddle with it too much")

A wonderful extension.
It would be nice if the 'For' field could optionally display the real recipient instead of 'Yourself' (terms translated from the French version), as there may be more than one user using TB.
There is an extra extension for this:
https://addons.mozilla.org/thunderbird/addon/54317
You could also turn it off by Tools->Options->Advanced->Reading&Display: Turn off "Show only display name for people in my address book".
