Indeed a useful add-on, but I can't seem to get it work in gmail. In all other forms, it picks up my language after a few words, but not when typing an e-mail in gmail.
By the way, let me know if I can help with Swedish localization.
Hi! Of course you can help, thank you! mrwarper <whirly thing> yahoo dot es; BabelZilla is planned but not working yet. Sorry about the long delay, AMO sucks a a social network.

Very useful extension.
The latest version (1.3.1) add flexibility: usage of Add-on bar rather than status bar (for Firefox versions >= 4).
Tip regarding add-on bar management: On Firefox version 4 and upper, the Add-on bar is now used rather than status bar. To get Dictionary-switcher in the add-on bar you must add SpellChecker button to it (right click on the bar and select Customize)
By the way, how can I submit french localization ?

easy to use but there could be some more customization options.

Useful extension! But distracting when used in conjunction with the extension Barlesque. Could you add the option - do not display language in the status bar?

Great Addon, works very good with Firefox4 (German/English).
one suggestion: Is it possible that the icon would be directly over the text field? That would make selecting much easier, if the automatic language is wrong.
@satvic: you need to activate the new addon bar (strg+/), which is kinda the same as the old status bar.

it kinda switches languages automatically (between English-Spanish-Russian), but there is no button or status icon any more. Definitely needs to be updated

Hi! Great AddOn, but isn't there any way to donate?

Nice tool, but it's not switching dictionaries automatic...

Does not work with Finnish language. Finnish/Finland is shown as a selectable spell checking langauges in the Firefox (3.6.x) context menu, but Dictionary Switcher doesn't list it at all.

In FF 4 the status bar (now called "add-on bar") is turned off by default. So I suppose it's better to have an icon in the navigation bar.

Very useful. Make it work on 4.0b7 too please.

If you don't need the (IMHO far too slow) "detect as I type" feature, have a look at "Quick Locale Switcher": https://addons.mozilla.org/de/firefox/addon/1333/
I used Dictionary Switcher a long time and it works quite well (therefore 4 stars), but I'd like a way to select locales to show in the list (the list is very long on many Unix-like systems cause they often provide many locales). Additionally, Quick Locale Switcher provides some additional features beside the full control of the listed locales.

Both auto preference and auto detection working for me. Tested using Swedish and English on .se and .com domains.
Nice minimalistic interface, no unnecessary configuration or icons.

I have no idea where to start. What about the fact, that this tool is not able to determine the language? Sounds hard in the first place, but it is easy in the basic: Use a german dictionary on all domains that end on .de, use the american for all that end with .com. Or, at least, save the settings once they are made for a domain. This tool doesn't. This is not stupid - "stupid" is a level this tool could reach after a lot of work.
But this is not everything. After installing the book, the dictionary is slow as hell. Slower than I type.
Or what about this: In FF 3.6, when opening a tab, it is opened regularly right to the tab you`re actually working at. But hell, no, not if you install this addon. If you install this addon, this function will be permanently disabled. The only way to get back this function is to install one of the tab-addons like tabmix plus. But this is really crazy when you think that you only need this one function.
What about the network problems? After installing this addon my Firefox not only regularly crashed, no, it stops working. Firefox couldn't connect to the network. I reckon that this tab is spying out my behavior and try to connect to somewhere and that this causes the problems. I don't see any reason that switching between Dictionary A and Dictionary B could cause such problems.
Before anyone asks: This problems showed up on several installations on several Win-OS's. Uninstall the addon, no problem. Install the addon, hell. So I'm damn sure the problems were caused by this addon.
I will inform Mozilla about this problem and explain it to some developers to investigate the problem. Sorry, but this is far away from normal. I saw a lot of weird problems with a lot of addons, but this is the worst addon ever. If there would be a possibility to give a negative rating, I would do so.

Nice add-on!
For merindol: remove *.aff and *.dic files which are symbolic links in /usr/share/myspell/dicts/.
(For example I had fr_BE, fr_CH, fr_CA .aff and .dic pointing to fr_FR.aff and .dic.)

Hi.
Thanks for this great addon.
There is only one feature that miss me :
In the language pack, I have a lot of locales I don't care about (en_CA, en_AU, ...) that have automatically been installed (at least on Ubuntu Linux) and that I can't remove. So, if the addon allowed me to select locales I want to see in the list, that would be great.

"[...] and then you click on prefers..prefenrec...prefre" WAaaahh! Wie schreibt man das nochmal? Yet again I have to google the correct spelling. I feel ashamed. I'm tired. I wish I would have an english dictionary installed beside my native german one. Hey, I do have! There has to be an easy way to switch between those.
There is!
Dictionary Switcher
It works well. It does what its name implies. It isn't rainbow colored. It doesn't blink. It is simple. It...it works...and...It is cute!
So avoid the tiredness. Avoid the shame! It will work for you, too.

I like the idea but auto switch doesn't work for me at all. I use ukrainian, english and russian dictionaries.firefox3.6. I recommend you to look at keyswitcher http://switch.kroogi.com/ it detects langueges 99% fine.
Best regards
